2 solutions for a driveway without any weeds

Unwanted weeds are a frequent nightmare for gardeners, especially when they invade the driveway. Far from being aesthetic, it does not look very neat. An alley full of weeds is enough to spoil the most beautiful of gardens. Only two natural solutions allow you to finally see your path without any weeds, and it is not necessary to resort to more or less toxic weedkillers to put an end to these unwanted spontaneous-growing grasses. Let’s do a check in.

The best: weeding your driveway by hand

Certainly tedious and sometimes a little painful in the lumbar region, the manual weeding is by far the best solution to have a fairway without any unwanted weeds. It can take several days if you have a very long and very wide aisle. But the result is clear: it’s nickel and you are rewarded for your efforts for a long time. In addition, it is very green and it costs nothing.

The procedure is extremely simple and leaves no holes (or hardly any): we equip ourselves with a wheelbarrow and a simple knife with which we dislodge the roots by performing a quarter turn with the blade at the foot of the plant. taking care to penetrate the tip of the knife into the ground. The collected herbs are immediately placed in the wheelbarrow. Be careful not to shred the roots of some plants because each small piece can give birth to a new plant (the galley!).

These weeds can then be deposited in the compost only if they have not yet gone to seed, otherwise, we take them to the recycling center. You can also take away all the herbs that you have removed from the path.

It’s important to repeat the weeding operation by hand as soon as new weeds start showing the tip of their nose rather than waiting for the driveway to look like a fallow lawn! This will then be much faster than the first time, less exhausting too, and this will prevent unwanted spontaneous plants from multiplying vigorously afterwards.

Finally, if you plan to create an alley, the good idea is to install a geotextile felt of very high quality before laying gravel, pebbles or slabs. Hand weeding will be surprisingly easy and, the icing on the cake, the geotextile prevents many weeds from developing. But professionals advise replacing it after 10 or 12 years because it loses its effectiveness over time …

Complementary solution: use a thermal weed burner in the driveway

This non-polluting device eliminates weeds in an ecological way. But we can only obtain a convincing result by strictly following the instructions for use generally supplied with the machine. Many gardeners don’t even bother to read it, so they use their thermal weeder. in spite of common sense and conclude, of course, that this type of device is useless. It’s wrong !

The thermal weed control is a technique that works on condition that you do not try to burn the plant by insisting, as this would be counterproductive. On the contrary, we expose each weed to high heat. for 60 seconds only in order to generate thecell bursting of the leaf system. This is how we then observe the total destruction of the plants passed through a thermal weed killer, provided, however, that they are annual species because the perennials resist them quite well and that the plants are still young.

It is well understood that this method can only be suitable for a tiny alley moderately scattered with young annual weeds. It is therefore a good solution if one wishes complete or fine-tune the weeding by hand, knowing anyway that it is also manually that we will have to remove the dead weeds after a heat treatment.

Essential: weed your driveway even in winter

If we do not wish to destroy the efforts made during the past year to maintain an aisle in pristine condition, it is necessary continue to weed during the winter because weeds are damn tough and able to brave harsh conditions during the off-season. In the spring, as soon as the temperatures soften, weed growth starts with a bang. It does not take long for these unwanted people to transform the driveway into a green path under the annoyed gaze of the gardener, however full of good will, who had not counted his hours spent weeding.

It is nevertheless recommended to preserve in winter certain species ofspontaneous herbs that bloom beautifully in order to allow foraging insects to feed at the time when the garden is still quite poor in inflorescences. In some carefully chosen places, we can for example delay the removal of daisies, Canada thistle, also keep a few dandelions, a little red chickweed, buttercup which is none other than the creeping buttercup as well as bindweed. But beware, it will be necessary to be very vigilant and dislodge these weeds with their roots in March or April because lilacs, tulips, rosemary and other irises will then be in bloom, leaving the insects enough to forage in the garden.

Don’t lie to each other, we realize that there is few solutions effective for weeding your garden path without product. But we don’t care a bit because, by the way, no product whatever it is does get an aisle as clean as manual weeding.

A truly remarkable result can only be obtained with a war of attrition which leaves no room for discouragement. Tenacity always wins since regular weeding ends up considerably weakening many local spontaneously growing species. We can only encourage gardeners to weed their driveways by hand. always wearing gloves because some species bite.
