From a group of Southeast Asian countries that were divided by wars and overcome many difficulties, today ASEAN is a regional organization of 10 Southeast Asian countries operating within a unified framework, the home of the world. unites more than 650 million people with diverse cultural identities and an economic community with the 5th largest GDP in the world, a reliable and important partner of many countries, plays a central role in important processes of dialogue, cooperation and linkage in the region.

Despite limited resources, the image of ASEAN countries joining hands to support each other to overcome the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will forever be a symbol of ASEAN solidarity and unity.

Experiencing many challenges in the face of changes in the world, ASEAN’s solidarity, unity and central role have been fostered and consolidated. It is the “ASEAN way”, solidarity and unity that has helped ASEAN and its member countries overcome the turbulent periods of the region and the world. Through difficulties and turbulence, the more ASEAN matures, the more the spirit of solidarity, unity and centrality are enhanced, and the more ASEAN’s ways and identity shine.

In fact, only when maintaining and promoting its own way and identity can ASEAN affirm its prestige, position and central role, its relations with partners are broadened and deepened. thereby enlisting international support and assistance to promote ASEAN’s development and integration. Up to now, ASEAN has a dialogue partnership with 11 important countries and organizations (China, the US, Russia, Japan, Korea, India, EU…), of which the UK is a country that has just been recognized by ASEAN. awarded the status of a Dialogue Partner at the 54th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on August 2-6, 2021. Being faithful to its purpose and operating principles, ASEAN has properly, fully and appropriately played its role in promoting dialogue, cooperation and building trust among countries inside and outside the region in order to maintain peace and stability in the region. Promoting economic integration and linkage has been a central content in the ASEAN integration process for more than five decades. To date, intra-regional trade accounts for about 25% of ASEAN’s total trade turnover. The effective implementation of the ASEAN Economic Community is pushing ASEAN towards a single market with the current size of nearly 3 trillion USD, where goods, services, investment and skilled labor can flow freely. In addition, ASEAN is also the center of an open economic space with a network of 8 free trade agreements (FTAs) including the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) and 7 FTAs ​​with important partners. in which the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) creates a free trade area that accounts for 30% of the world’s population and 32% of global GDP.
