Bed orientation for better sleep: advice and good practices


That’s it, do you have your new bed, box spring and mattress? Can’t wait to try it. It’s a wonderful time to tell yourself that you are going to have a great night: but before you experience it, you have to make an important decision. Where are you going to place this new bed? In your room, of course, but where in the room? Against the wall, away from the door, under the window? The space can be arranged in such a way that you don’t have that many solutions. So what if your bed can fit in different places, how do you choose? Here are some tips to make it easy for you to fall asleep.

Where to put your bed in your bedroom?

Are you like the majority of people who center their bed against the wall facing the entrance to their bedroom? If you do this, make sure you have a nice headboard, as this will be the focal point of your room. The eye will necessarily land on this place, the center of attention in your room. Make sure there are no water or gas pipes nearby.

Placing your bed in front of the front door against a wall is not always possible. See which wall is long enough to accommodate it. If you have a big enough room, you don’t have to put your bed up against a wall. You can install it diagonally, after all, or straight but in the middle of the space. However, avoid placing your bed under a window as this could make it difficult to open. On the other hand, if you have several windows in your room, you can place your bed between two of them, so as to create a nice symmetry.

Just as it is not good to block a window opening, do not block a heater or air conditioning system with your bed. This could have the adverse effect of increasing this effect of heat or cold.

The place of your bed in the bedroom: a cultural question?

When placing your furniture in a room, it is always a question of fluidity. What is optimal, depending on where you enter the room, how you move in it, and what obstacles may be hindering your movement? All of this should be considered carefully. According to the principles of feng shui, your bed is the most important piece of furniture in your home because it represents you. Just think about how many hours you spend there. You probably spend more time there than anywhere else. You usually sleep there. When you sleep you are in a more sensitive state to the energies around you. So the placement of your bed affects you both when you are in a waking state and when you are in a sleep state.

In feng shui, on this subject, the most important element is: you must be able to see the door when you are lying in your bed. You do not have to install your bed exactly in front of the door, on the contrary, it is better to position it a little diagonally to the door. Of course, this may not be possible in many cases. You can still find a solution by hanging a mirror that will help you see your bedroom door from your bed.

Then, avoid opening your door directly near your bed. It is not recommended.

Still according to the principles of feng shui, your headboard must be backed by a solid element, in other words a wall. It may seem obvious. However, you might be tempted to place your bed in the middle of your room. It’s up to you to see if you want to follow the rules of feng shui. If so, keep in mind that you and your bed need support behind you.

Another principle is that it is better to have space on each side of the bed rather than sticking it against a wall. The space on both sides allows for a certain balance.

  • Position your bed so that you can see the door when you are lying in it or make a correction with a mirror.
  • Check that the doors do not open directly in line with your bed.
  • Have a sturdy wall behind your headboard to support it.
