Cat education: 10 mistakes to avoid!

Welcoming a cat is a responsibility. His master must make sure to devote time to him, to give him all the care he needs. Its socialization is necessary for it to behave well with other pets but also with humans. Better that education begins as early as possible, when the animal is still a kitten. But be careful, in order for him to be happy and not have behavioral problems later, it requires skill, patience, consistency and a lot of love. Here are the 10 damaging mistakes you shouldn’t make when educating a kitten.

1 – let him scratch anywhere

A few days are enough for an uneducated cat to cause a lot of damage in a house and it is even worse in a kitten. Curtains, chair legs, sofa, rugs… everything fits. We offer him a scratching post or one cat tree so that it can continue to scratch without causing damage.

2 – be indifferent to your cat or kitten

It is not worth having a cat if it is to leave him alone in his corner and never share moments with him. Admittedly quite independent, the cat has need interactions with his master. He likes it when he talks to him, caresses him, brushes him. Contrary to popular belief, this little feline is far from being satisfied with being given food and drink. He is full of sensitivity and if his master is totally indifferent to his little companion, he may well be unhappy.

3 – Never play with your cat

Play is one of the most important points in cat education. He thus learns to share moments with his master and it is through this that we can establish a relationship of complicity between man and animal. In addition, the game allows him to exercise, release the stress, develop their motor skills, stimulate their cognitive functions. It has a positive impact on their reactivity and sharpens their intelligence. We can offer him different cat toys like games of skill, thinking and the like.

4 – Feed him only once a day

This is a serious mistake because the cat must instead be able to eat a little at a time but often. He is therefore left available to satisfy his nutritional needs without forgetting the bowl of fresh water. This will prevent him from going begging for food from the neighbors. In any case, you should know that the cat should not be fed like a dog.

5 – deprive it of the outside

Even if it is more complicated to let your cat out when you live in an urban environment or in the immediate vicinity of the highway, access to the outdoors is essential for its development. It is a fabulous playground but also a place rich in olfactory discoveries. It is also outside that the little feline can express its hunting instinct and mark its territory. You can easily take your cat out on a leash after having accustomed it to the harness, which is more practical and comfortable than the collar, so that it becomes familiar with its environment. But be careful, it must be taken out several times a day.

6 – Yelling at your cat or hitting it to punish it

Yelling at your cat when he has done something stupid is the best way to make him an animal anxious, suspicious of his master, even aggressive. As for hitting him, we don’t even think about it. Violence has no place anywhere else, and by the way, animal abuse is prohibited by law. On the other hand, it is possible to reprimand your cat or to scold him by simply raising his voice, but without yelling, and provided that it is done immediately.

Arguing it after the fact is absolutely useless because the animal will not understand why its breeder is angry. If he is not caught in the act, then it should be ignored because he knows how to perceive the discontent in his master. Firmness, dexterity and subtlety are therefore essential to punish a kitty. But if you want to prevent him from committing big mistakes, it is better to encourage him by congratulating him when he behaves well.

7 – Let him steal food

As soon as a cat arrives at the family home, whether it is an adult animal or a kitten, it is necessary to forbid him to climb onto the kitchen counter, on tables (living room, dining room) and on the desk which must remain the territory of the members of the family but certainly not part of that of the animal. In order not to tempt the devil, it is imperative to do not leave food there, which involves clearing the table at the end of a meal and clearing up the kitchen.

So that he does not steal food, it is from the start that we must act. The cat must be sufficiently fed because if it is hungry it will always try to steal something to eat. But the master should never share his meal with him by taking it on his knees for example. It would only encourage unacceptable behavior.

8 – Allow him to sleep in bed

The cat should not have access to its masters’ bedroom or those of the children. Sleeping with pets has been shown to promote contaminations of all kinds. To each his own territory, therefore, and to achieve this, we must not stall at any time. The simplest thing is therefore that the doors of the prohibited rooms remain closed. From an early age, he must be accustomed to sleeping in a place reserved for him, such as for example the back kitchen, the entrance … We can note however that cats hate the smell of eucalyptus… It can be a solution to dissuade them from going where it is prohibited.

9 – let him do his business anywhere

Either we get our cat used to defecate outside but in this case, he must have a cat flap to come and go as he pleases, or we provide him with a litter box inside the house. There was no way he would defecate anywhere. But to encourage him to always use his box, it must be cleaned very regularly, the soiled litter removed every day and replaced with fresh. It is also very important the litter pleases him. Some cats only like bins without a lid, others only go to toilet houses … But be careful, always place the cat’s litter away from its bowl.

10 – let your cat nibble on houseplants

Not only does the cat love to scratch the substrate of potted plants, but he also has the annoying habit of nibbling on plants. It is unbearable because the damage can be significant on the plantations. More serious still, many plants are toxic to cats. It is therefore necessary to react immediately in order to protect the health of his little companion. Again, it is a matter of good education. The best solution to prevent your kitty from beating down on Dieffenbachia, Amaryllis or Chlorophytum is to take it “hand in the bag” and spray it with water while he is in action. That was enough to make him leave. Two or three similar episodes should be enough to deter him. At the same time, we provide him with a pot of grasses that he can chew without any danger to his health.
