The toilet can suddenly be blocked, either partially or completely. It is a problem that must be resolved quickly. We can call a plumber for an emergency intervention, but the bill can turn out to be steep, especially if the unblocking of the toilets has to be done in the evening, during the weekend or during a public holiday. It is therefore more than useful to know the different solutions that allow you to unclog your toilet yourself, either using a product, or with equipment and we keep as plan B the call of a pro if the toilet pipe remains blocked despite everything.
Unclog the toilet pipes: beware of very toxic chemicals
You can find in supermarkets a chemical unblocker suitable for the toilet pipe. It is generally very effective because it is enough to deposit the product in the bottom of the bowl and to wait ten minutes (a complete night according to the cases) then to flush the toilet to unclog your toilets. It is rare for a plug to resist this kind of solution. The liquid pipe unblocker removes toilet paper, grease, hair, all organic matter, etc.
The disadvantage of this type of pipe product is that it is toxic. Its inhalation is possible during use and this causes irritations in the eyes, hands and even mucous membranes. In the most serious cases, lesions can be permanent and the risks of blindness are not to be ruled out.
A chemical unblocker in fact contains sodium pentahydrate metasilicate or caustic soda. This type of component is frequently used in the industrial field in order to manufacture detergents. It is therefore recommended to wear protective goggles as well as gloves and a mask when it comes to using a chemical product to unclog the toilet pipes.
Even if we can read here and there that there is no danger for materials including plastic, we must still be careful. In addition, theenvironment is very sensitive to caustic soda which pollutes groundwater as well as waterways and is, suddenly, dangerous also for fauna and flora. This category of products should therefore only be used as a last resort.
In this family of chemical unblockers, we also find the one withhydrochloric acid or to thesulfuric acid. They are very effective even on large plugs, but they should only be used in exceptional circumstances, when milder solutions have failed, because they are also very corrosive and ultra polluting.
Clogged toilet pipes: the usefulness of washing up liquid
Softer but still effective on small traffic jams, the dishwashing liquid mixed withboiling water is a means not to be overlooked when the toilets are clogged due to quite moderate congestion. This is the first-line solution only if the toilet bowl is not completely filled with water.
The procedure is simple: first you put a little washing-up liquid in the toilet bowl, then you pour a bucket of ultra hot water. Thus, the force of the water can help to drain the offending small plug.
If nothing happens and the toilets remain clogged, it is important not to repeat the operation because there is a risk of completely filling the bowl, or even causing it to overflow …
Unblock your toilet: sodium bicarbonate combined with alcohol vinegar
Sodium bicarbonate is a jack-of-all-trades which can therefore be of great service when a well-clogged toilet is no longer draining anything. The solution is extremely simple since it suffices to pour a cup of bicarbonate crystals then a glass of alcohol vinegar or White vinegar. A foam then forms following a chemical reaction impressive but without any danger, neither for health, nor for the environment. However, it is recommended to close the toilet bowl as soon as these products have been poured into the bottom and to pause for 30 to 40 minutes so that the active foam can take effect. Afterwards, the pipes are rinsed by pouring only a bucket of very hot water into the WCs.
This bicarbonate / vinegar solution quickly dissolves plugs, cleans the toilet pipes, descales and deodorizes. And what’s more, it only costs a few euros.
Unclog the toilet pipes: the septic tank product with enzymes
Even if you have a sewer system, when it comes to unclogging the toilet without the help of a plumber, you can use a liquid product for a septic tank because it contains enzymes. It is a solution which works well on small caps only. The result is satisfactory, provided the enzyme product is left to act overnight. In the morning, all that remains is to flush the toilet.
Unblock toilets with suitable equipment
At least when we resort to a mechanical solution to evacuate a plug that obstructs the toilet pipes, there is no risk of polluting waterways or groundwater, or even being the victim of irritation or burns. Here is the material that can be used to unclog toilets and which gives good results.
- The suction cup for WC which causes a back and forth movement of the water, in the vertical direction, and consequently mechanically releases a plug that is even quite substantial.
- Thewater vacuum cleaner that is used first to empty all the water that is stagnant in the bowl, then to suck the stopper stuck in the bottom. Be careful never to use a traditional vacuum cleaner for this type of repair!
- The vacuum pump or pump unblocker ultra efficient, proof of this is that plumbers use it to unclog their clients’ toilets very quickly. The pump is equipped with piston it suffices to activate by pulling it fully upwards before placing the unblocker in the bowl so that its base completely covers the toilet hole. Then it remains to make energetic movements up and down by pumping with the piston. Eventually the plug is drained.
- The ferret with crank (preferable to ferret without crank), which gives good results to those who know how to be patient. But when the toilets are clogged, we have no other choice but to unclog the pipe in order to make the little corners operational again … The ferret must therefore be introduced into the bowl and then into the pipe until it is blocked by the plug. It is therefore the moment to manipulate the crank in order to activate the ferret which goes like this disintegrate cap. It is assumed that this is eliminated when the ferret is no longer blocked. It is therefore necessary to remove the device from the toilet and then flush the toilet.
For limit the risk of clogging the toilet pipes, we avoid throwing in too thick toilet paper – even if it is very pleasant -, paper tissues, paper towels, condoms, feminine protections such as tampons and sanitary napkins … also the disinfectant wipes that it is better to throw in the trash rather than in the bowl, and we are wary of biodegradable rollers which still clog the pipe in the long run. Finally, you have to be particularly careful with very young children who may find it super fun to “hide” their little Playmobil or Lego parts in the toilets …
