The Covid-19 pandemic continues its deadly spread around the world, and the United States has crossed a new historic death threshold. In France, the government is worried about the situation and could take new measures, this time localized.
United States mourns 500,000 deaths from Covid-19
The announcement was made by the count made by the NBC News channel on Sunday February 21, 2021: the United States surpassed the barrier of 500,000 deaths linked to Covid-19, confirming that the country is the most bereaved in the world. The number of cases, for its part, has exceeded 28.7 million since the start of the pandemic.
At the World level, it is the threshold of 111 million cases that has been crossed (according to Johns Hopkins University) and there are 2.456 million deaths. The situation is worrying because, with the good weather coming, the risk is that citizens will respect barrier gestures less and less in order to find themselves after a harsh winter on the psychological and health level.
New measures in France …
The French government, in particular, is on the alert: the pupils of zone A resume their lessons on Monday February 22, 2021, after two weeks of leave where they were able to move freely. Jean-Michel Blanquer, Minister of National Education, confirmed on Saturday February 20, 2021 that a vast campaign of tests will be carried out in schools on the occasion of this new school year in order to prevent classrooms, which are still open, from becoming clusters.
For adults too, the executive fears the worst. Especially in the South-East, the area most affected by Covid-19 at the end of February 2021. Expected Sunday February 22, 2021, the announcements concerning a possible partial and localized confinement in the Alpes-Maritimes did not finally take place and are expected Monday February 22, 2021 in the morning. The government must decide on the methodology for defining the areas affected by these new measures, as well as their form: total, partial, weekend confinement, etc.
… And against France?
While contaminations in France are not decreasing, there are still more than 20,000 daily cases in France (3.6 million cases since the start of the pandemic), there could be questions of new restrictions for French border residents.
Germany, in particular, is considering qualifying the Moselle department as a risk zone, and in fact closing the borders (except for workers). A hardening of the traffic conditions whereas until now the French and the Germans could get to the other side of the border subject to staying at a maximum distance of 30 kilometers around their home.
