Emergency numbers restored after the historic blackout

France was struck, on June 2, 2021 in the evening and at night, with a historic failure: emergency numbers for the SAMU, firefighters and the police were difficult or even completely inaccessible. If the problem is resolved, a crisis meeting is being prepared.

France hit by a breakdown of emergency numbers

Given the importance of emergency numbers, an outage of this magnitude is cause for concern: in many territories, from 6 p.m. on June 2, 2021, the emergency numbers of the SAMU (15) then, gradually, the fire brigade (18) and the police (17) broke down. Random failures but widespread enough to cause panic.

Quickly, on social networks, the local numbers were revealed by Internet users and the services themselves. And, according to Orange information from June 3, 2021, the service has been restored since around midnight, but remained under surveillance until about 6 a.m. Because, according to the first elements, it is at Orange that the failure occurred, linked to a maintenance manipulation that went wrong.

The hypothesis of the cyberattack is, for the moment, excluded.

A crisis meeting Thursday, June 3, 2021

If breakdowns can occur, the extent of it has not failed to be strongly criticized by emergency physicians who were concerned about a potential endangering of the lives of others, especially in the event of medical emergencies.

The government reacted: Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior, announced overnight to return immediately from his trip to Tunisia. Cédric O, Secretary of State for Digital also traveling to Tunisia, also announced his urgent return. The two should meet for a videoconference with the prefects, in particular, in order to take stock of the situation.
