Has e-commerce really benefited from the Covid crisis? – EconomyMorning

Sometimes it is good to re-establish certain truths, especially when the rumor has been spread a lot. In 2020, during the first confinement and to a lesser extent, the second, online traders, and in particular Amazon, were accused of taking advantage of the crisis.

A moderate increase in e-commerce turnover

We have been told of e-commerce giants doubling, tripling, quadrupling their turnover, by stealing it from closed merchants despite themselves. The reality is different : in 2020, the turnover of e-commerce grew by 8.5%.

You will tell me, it is already a lot when you compare it to those who have lost, 50, 60, 70% or more. But the famous transfer mentioned on fewer occasions did not take place. The proof: the turnover of French e-commerce had increased more between 2019 and 2020.

New online traders

In addition, we must not forget that in this turnover, a part was carried out by new entrants : mainly traditional businesses that have started selling online on Amazon, CDiscount or Ebay marketplaces.

However, it should also be remembered that online sales normally include sales of trips, theater or concert tickets, and tickets to amusement parks. And there, unfortunately, of course, the figures are not good. But to be complete on the subject, remember that for every 10 euros spent by French consumers at merchants last year, only 1 was spent online.
