Both decorative and useful

The fountain is a decorative element present in the gardens since the dawn of time. In Antiquity, they are true works of art of marble and carved stone which adorn the garden of the patricians. Eternal symbol of abundance and youth, the presence of a fountain magnificently embellishes the garden that welcomes it. Nowadays, the variety of models allows everyone to bring to their garden the irreplaceable decorative aspect provided by a fountain.

As we will see, some fountains are purely decorative and operate in a closed circuit. But you can also connect it to the water network; it thus becomes usable for your water and irrigation needs.

Refreshing and soothing

A fountain can be useful in several ways. For your garden, it brings a welcome note of freshness to the heart of the hottest days. Thanks to its gushing mechanism, its water is constantly renewed, without algae, mosquito larvae or other unwanted insects. It thus constitutes a source of water appreciated by birds and small animals who can come and drink there. With a fountain, an entire ecosystem develops in your garden …

Natural or mechanical, the perpetual gushing of water is conducive to appeasement. When we know that some insomniacs buy CDs of water noises to fall asleep, we appreciate the presence of a fountain at its true value … A guaranteed nap nearby! Next to a fountain, conversations calm down, thoughts wander, dreams arise, time stands still.

2 – Choose the type of fountain that suits you

You will find three main types of fountains, depending on whether you want a purely decorative fountain or a functional model connected to the drinking water network.

The central fountain to pose

This fountain is mainly decorative. It quickly becomes the central aesthetic element of your garden. With its closed circuit water system, place it wherever you want. She only asks for an electrical device for her water jet. Coupled with a basin, it can also be useful by filtering and oxygenating its water.

The wall-mounted fountain

Connected to the drinking water network, it is installed against a wall, placed on the ground. It has a basin and a tap. Not only decorative, we can therefore connect a garden hose or other element.

The wall fountain to be fixed

Same model as the previous one, this charming fountain is fixed to the wall.

The standing fountain

It can be installed anywhere, like a terminal. Connected to the network and equipped with a small tank, it provides the benefits of a water point at the desired location.

The column fountain

Same model as the previous one but smaller, it has no bin.

The drinking fountain

Purely utilitarian, this fountain (most often in aluminum) is placed or fixed under the wall or column mode.

3 – Deco side, what is your style of fountain?

In the world of fountains, there is such a variety of designs and styles that there is something to get lost in. With or without tap, wall mounted or installed, the fountain adapts to your tastes. If it is generally round, sometimes square or rectangular, it is its decorative style that gives it its special character.

The traditional fountain, a taste of authenticity

The large traditional fountain settles in the heart of a large garden with abundant vegetation, she sublimates it with her quiet presence. The classic fountain, often in stone, is ideally suited to the garden of an old house, giving it a real cachet. More expensive of course, but so much more beautiful …

If you want a full-fledged work, there are plenty of carved fountains, adorned with characters, animals or large objects… Evoking mythology or all kinds of patterns related to water or abundance, they attract the eyes by the elegance of their shapes.

If you like atmospheres baroque or retro, again, the possibilities are numerous. Your fountain will be dressed in reconstituted stone in the desired style, or a cast iron basin with an old tap… Everything is possible.

The contemporary fountain, eternally modern

Do you want a sober and modern fountain? Timeless, the fountain plays with fashions by embracing its time. This is how you can choose a more sober model, with refined or geometric shapes, dressed in zinc, wood or raw stone … Perfectly in tune with modernity, your contemporary fountain adapts to the most modern habitats. Often square in shape, the chic of simplicity combines with a timeless cachet … for the pleasure of the eyes.

The oriental fountain, atmosphere from elsewhere

The exotic fountains are refined, adorned with bamboo, teak, or declined in perfectly Zen mineral atmospheres… You will find small Zen fountains, simple and elegant, with rounded shapes, bringing a welcome softness to your garden. In another style, Moroccan fountains give the garden the warmth of their oriental motifs and the delicacy of marble or stone. Change of scenery guaranteed.

4 – Which operation to choose?

As we have seen, there are two types of operation: with open or closed water circuit.

Functional fountains, with running water:

Running water fountains have a utilitarian aspect because they are connected to the drinking water network, thus providing a water point that is always available. This type of fountain is functional; equipped with a basin and a tap, they draw directly from the water supply. This type of fountain is quite easy to install. The bung is fixed on the drain hole and the basin on the base of the fountain, itself sealed on a water drain. The connection to the drinking water network is made by a set of waterproof pipes and fittings.

Decorative fountains, in a closed circuit

Closed circuit fountains, which work with a built-in pump, are only decorative. Constantly recycled in the internal circuit, their water is not drinkable. Once their tank is full, it is always the same quantity of water which circulates and produces the movement of water which makes its charm. This type of pump, hidden in the base or near the fountain, requires an electrical supply to operate. The pump is usually supplied with the fountain.

The pump can be electric or solar

Yes, you can possibly do without an electrical hookup by using a solar pump system. It is the energy of the sun which then ensures the operation of the pump. If you opt for a conventional electrical connection, you will need to connect your fountain to the general electrical panel and provide a buried and protected power supply so as to be perfectly waterproof. It also depends on the size of the fountain: solar operation, very suitable for small fountains, is insufficient for a large fountain. In this case an electrical connection is necessary, as well as the addition of a programmer to be able to automatically turn off the fountain at night.

5 – choose the right material

There are a multitude of materials available, each bringing a different style to your fountain.

Stone, natural or reconstituted

Perfect for rustic fountains, it is a heavier material which gives an authentic and old look. Reconstituted stone is much cheaper than natural.

Resin

This lightweight material imitates stone, wood or cast iron to perfection. It allows to consider many shapes and adapts to all styles. It has the advantage of being durable and economical.

Wood

Warm, the wood used for a fountain must be of class 4, that is to say resistant to water, to xylophagous insects and various parasites. But what style! Wood is perfect for both village and modern ambiences. Bamboo and teak give the exotic fountains a more oriental style.

Metal: galvanized steel, aluminum, zinc

These lightweight metals are popular for functional fountains, to which they give a much appreciated contemporary style. Decorative, metal creates a vintage atmosphere as well as an industrial style, with the added bonus of very good durability!

Cast iron

High class ! Cast iron is a beautiful and resistant material, which gives the fountain an authentic character and unmistakable style. It remains less expensive than stone and for it its robustness, its timeless style and a very good value for money. In addition it allows all possible reasons; always with the same elegance.

6 – Where to install your fountain?

The important thing is to install your fountain on level and stable ground. If the floor is too furnished and the fountain is large, it is better to provide a concrete slab before installing it. In your garden, install your fountain in a place neither too sunny nor under the trees. In direct sunlight, the water may evaporate quickly and the fountain will run dry. Under the trees, it will be overgrown with leaves, which will require additional maintenance to keep the water clean. Not to mention that falling leaves may regularly clog the pumping mechanism. Finally, choose an area sheltered from the wind to avoid unwanted splashing water.

7 – How much does a fountain cost?

This is very variable, depending on the size of the fountain, how it works and the material it is made of. For a small fountain, you can only pay around fifty euros. A small cast iron model can cost 150 to 200 euros, while a large stone fountain will cost you more than 1000 euros…. The price range can thus extend from 50 to 1000 euros, depending on the different criteria.
