Let’s do a check in.

Prolapse in cats: symptoms and causes

There are several types of prolapse in cats.

Nictitating membrane prolapse

This translucent membrane (Tertia palpebra), commonly called third eyelid, has for role to protect the eye of the cat and to moisten it by diffusing the tear film which is produced by glands of which the gland of the nictitating membrane. This is usually not visible, except in the event of a problem. This is the case, for example, when the ligament that holds this gland in place is broken. We are talking about prolapse of the third eyelid. We then see a pink mass in the inner corner of the eye, hence the name cherry eye given to this condition.

This prolapse leads to dry eye since the nictitating membrane gland stops producing tears. In the vast majority of cases, both eyes are affected within a few months of each other. The procidence of the third eyelid may be the cause of tearing, pus discharge, or conjunctivitis. Fortunately, this type of prolapse is rarely painful.

Rectal prolapse in cats

Kittens and young cats are more frequently the victims of this type of prolapse, but older cats are not exempt. It manifests itself byinvagination, through the anus, from the rectal wall.

Anal prolapse in cats

It manifests itself by a protrusion of the anal mucosa.

In these two cases of prolapse, the main causes are parasitism, a foreign body in the rectum or constipation. Symptoms of rectal or anal prolapse are as follows:

  • The emergence, at the level of the anal opening, of a more or less important red mass,
  • Diarrhea and / or difficulty in evacuating faeces,
  • Sharp localized pains.

Urethral prolapse in the male cat

When’urethra is prolapsed, we can see a bright red collar at the end of the cat’s penis. Bleeding is possible. The main causes of urethral prolapse are sexual arousal, cystitis or other affections of the urinary tract, or even vomiting or sneezing due to the very strong intra-abdominal pressure.

Prolapse of the matrix in the cat

This term refers toexpulsion part of the uterus and / or vaginal mucosa through the vulvar lips. There is significant swelling of the tissues visible outside the body of the cat, as well as their engorgement. This type of prolapse can occur during periods of heat or even during childbirth because of the contractions allowing the kittens to be expelled.

Prolapse in cats: treatment

The treatment of a prolapse is decided case by case since everything depends on its location and therefore on its cause. The veterinarian must first identify the source in order to treat the underlying problem. In parallel, it generally resorts to surgery in order to bury and reposition the nictitating membrane or prolapsed organ. Finally, he prescribes pain relievers in case of pain, and so that the cat is not tempted to lick or scratch itself, it is necessary to make it wear a collar until his full recovery.

Prolapse in cats: prevention
