Recently, the group of partner countries including the United States, Japan, India and Australia have expressed their desire to strengthen relations with ASEAN countries in the field of freedom at sea.

At the recent India-US Forum, Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun said that countries in the “Diamond Quartet” (including the United States, Japan, India, Australia) could strengthen their contact with ASEAN countries and cooperate to protect freedom at sea.

Commenting on this information at the Foreign Ministry’s regular press conference on the afternoon of October 15, Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Thi Thu Hang affirmed that ASEAN always welcomes ideas and initiatives contributing to peace, stability and general prosperity.

Ms. Hang said that as the Chairwoman of ASEAN 2020, Vietnam sets the main task of the year to build a cohesive and proactive ASEAN. On that basis, Vietnam has been promoting its Chairmanship role, promoting Community building, affirming ASEAN’s central role in the regional structure and expanding ASEAN’s external relations.

In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic having a direct, long-term and profound impact on the socio-economic life of the world and the region, Vietnam wants and is ready to join ASEAN and its partner countries. cooperation of ASEAN works together to restore the economy and stabilize people’s lives for a peaceful, stable and prosperous Asia-Pacific. “In this process, international law, the spirit of dialogue and cooperation should always be upheld”, Ms. Hang said.

Ms. Hang also said that the 37th ASEAN Summit is scheduled to take place in mid-November 2020. “In the role of ASEAN President, Vietnam is working together with other member countries to actively prepare for this important meeting”.

Regarding the question of whether the conference will be held in person or online, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other stakeholders are preparing to be ready to organize plans and how ensure security, efficiency and practicality.

“ASEAN operates on the principle of consensus. When ASEAN countries agree on the organizational plan, we will officially notify”, Ms. Hang said.
