Stellantis, first European manufacturer ahead of Volkswagen

First victory for Stellantis: the group born from the marriage between the French PSA and the Italian-American Fiat Chrysler claims the place of the first European car manufacturer, ahead of the giant Volkswagen.

In the first three months of 2021, Stellantis takes first place in the ranking of car manufacturers from Volkswagen in Europe. The group, which includes the brands of PSA (Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Opel) and Fiat Chrysler (including Jeep and Alfa Romeo), announces that it has obtained a market share of 23.6% in the first quarter of 2021, ” on the PC (passenger cars) and LCV (light commercial vehicles) perimeter “. Utilities are what allows Stellantis to beat Volkswagen by a narrow lead.

Stellantis, first in Europe thanks to utilities

Volkswagen has indeed sold about 60,000 utilities in the first quarter, against 182,000 for Stellantis, which sells LCVs under different brands (Peugeot, Citroën, Open, Fiat) against only one for the German rival (under the Volkswagen brand). In addition, there are vehicles for individuals. According to the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA), Stellantis sold 669,676 units in the first three months, compared to 771,865 for Volkswagen. In terms of utilities, ACEA does not give a breakdown of sales by manufacturer, only the overall figure of 533,138 LCVs.

The Stellantis Push

Even without official data on the utility segment, we can therefore give Stellantis the benefit of the doubt. In addition, the Franco-Italian-American group could retain this first place in the future. In the first quarter of last year, it posted 622,447 passenger vehicle sales, against 802,748 for Volkswagen, which therefore shows a year-on-year decline, while Stellantis has grown, despite the difficulties related to the health crisis .
