On July 1, 2021, Deputy Foreign Minister Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Inter-agency Working Group (TCTLN) on Vietnam’s assuming the position of a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). chaired the preliminary meeting for the first 6 months of 2021.
Attending the meeting were representatives of leaders of the agencies under the GSO (Office of the Party Central Committee, Office of the Government, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of National Defense, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Party Central Committee) and representatives of a number of ministries and branches. acting in advising and propagating foreign affairs (Central Internal Affairs Committee, Central Propaganda Department, National Assembly Foreign Affairs Committee, Ministry of Information and Communications) and representatives of units of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

At the meeting, after listening to the report of the Department of International Organizations (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and through discussion, the delegates agreed with the common assessment that the political – security, socio-economic situation in the world The world in the first 6 months of 2021 continues to have complicated and unpredictable developments due to continued competition between major powers, prolonged conflicts and tensions in the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia such as the Israel-Palestinian conflict, instability in Libya, Yemen, Sudan, Tigray (Ethiopia), Afghanistan, political turmoil in Myanmar, severe global challenges such as climate change, terrorism, cross-border crime, food security, security water… along with the lingering effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Thereby, countries see more clearly the need to maintain peace and security, strengthen international cooperation, and take multilateral action to respond to these challenges.
In the above context, the UN Security Council continues to show and promote its role as the leading important mechanism responsible for maintaining international peace and security with a wide and rich agenda with a total of nearly 200 members. Meetings at Ambassadorial level, Head of Delegation and above and hundreds of working-level meetings, approved 63 documents of all kinds, discussed the situation on all continents and many notable issues such as dealing with Covid-19 pandemic, counter-terrorism, climate change, children in armed conflict, youth, peace and security, peacekeeping operations, small arms, light weapons…
On the basis of the foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralization, diversification and extensive, comprehensive and effective international integration of the 13th National Party Congress, Vietnam has promoted role, actively and actively participate in the common work to contribute substantially to the work of the Security Council and achieve many remarkable results.
Notably, we have successfully assumed the position of President of the Security Council for the second time (April 2021) and promoted four key events, namely the Security Council’s High-Level Discussion session with the theme “Strengthening the Security Council”. cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations to promote trust-building and dialogue in conflict prevention and resolution” chaired by President Nguyen Xuan Phuc, two Security Council Ministerial discussions on the topic of conflict resolution. Topics: “Recovering the consequences of landmines and maintaining sustainable peace: Strengthening cohesion for more effective action” and “Protecting infrastructure essential to people’s lives” by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Chaired by Bui Thanh Son and the Annual Open Discussion on Sexual Violence in Conflict chaired by Ambassador, Head of the Vietnamese Delegation to the UN.
Speaking at the conclusion of the meeting, Deputy Minister Dang Hoang Giang highly appreciated the proactive and active participation in contributions, effective and timely coordination of the member agencies of the GSO as well as other relevant agencies in the implementation of the project. advising, participating, contributing, and informing and propagating about Vietnam’s activities at the Security Council, contributing to well completing the set tasks and objectives, bringing about positive results, especially in the field of law.
