Characteristics of the Cockapoo

Also known as the Cocker Poodle, Cockerpoo, Spoodle or even Cockapoodle, the Cockapoo is in the lineage of these rather unique breeds born from human interventions. It is indeed a cross between the English or American Cocker Spaniel and the Miniature Poodle. There are different formats: Teacup Toy less than 25 cm and less than 3 kg, Toy 25 cm and weighing between 3 to 5.5 kg, Miniature from 28 to 35.5 cm and between 5.5 and 8 kg and Standard 36 cm and weighing more than 8 kg. Physically, the Cockapoo will either resemble the Cocker Spaniel or reveal a more dominant Poodle genetic load. He sports a black nose with clear eyes which are almond-shaped or round depending on the case. The ears are attached to the eye line and fall flat. The body ends in a bushy tail carried in the back line. In terms of coat, the dog generally has a long, straight and slightly curly coat with an absence of undercoat. Cockapoo breed history

Contrary to what one might think, the Cockapoo is not a recent breed since it made its appearance in the 60s in the United States. Although the breed is developing well and loved by families, it suffers from a lack of international recognition. Indeed, no official and large-scale canine authority recognizes the Cockapoo for the moment. This is also the case for most of the hybrid breeds also called in the jargon of designers dog, a notion that appeared in the 80s. However, there is the Cockapoo Club of America association and the American Cockapoo Club who fight to make this atypical dog known.

Necessary living conditions and behavior of the Cockapoo

The Cockapoo combines the best of both parents. He is described as an adorable animal who gets along with children, the elderly and even with other animals. He is particularly intelligent, which can facilitate his education. In addition to being outgoing, they are a very affectionate and playful breed. Moreover, he is often considered as a little clown who likes to be in the center of attention. On the other hand, he does not support the separation which generates in him a certain anxiety.

The Cockapoo is a relatively fragile being that can be affected by several pathologies such as allergies, cataracts, progressive atrophy of the retina, dislocation of the kneecap, dysplasia of the elbow and hip as well as some liver diseases. To be in good shape, he needs regular physical exercise, including a 20-minute walk a day, and must be given nutritious meals.
