The Pont-Audemer Spaniel is a medium-sized dog that measures between 52 and 58 cm with a weight ranging between 17 and 23 kg. The croup is sloping, the kidney is strong, broad and short, the back is curved or straight, the chest is broad and deep while the ribs are clearly visible and long. The dog reveals a rounded skull with an accentuated stop. The lips are thin, the muzzle has a developed center and is long while the slightly pointed nose is brown in color. The eyes reveal an expression of kindness and frankness. They are small in size and have a nutty or dark amber color. Compared to the ears, they are flat, moderately thick, and covered with long, curly bangs. Moreover, the coat is all the particularity of the Pont-Audemer Spaniel. The latter has a long and curly coat which gives it a very unique air. The standard tolerates unicoloured dresses with plain brown color or two-tone with hints of brown and heather gray.

History of the Pont-Audemer Spaniel breed

The Pont-Audemer Spaniel comes from Normandy, in the eponymous region which is near the Marais Vernier. The breed has been known from the start for waterfowl hunting due to its natural ease in moving in deep waters and marshes. Unfortunately, the Pont-Audemer Spaniel was close to extinction due to the two world wars. Luckily, some passionate breeders intervened to save it. Among other things, they cross with the Irish Water Spaniel. Even today, the Pont-Audemer Spaniel has only 300 subjects in France. Its official recognition by the FCI (Fédération cynologique Internationale) dates back to 1954.
