It is always preferable to cover your swimming pool in order to protect it from dirt and consequently to reduce the cleaning time but also the treatment products. However, in this field, the choice is not easy because there are different categories of covers for swimming pools. So let’s take stock of the different models of swimming pool covers, the standard to be respected, in which cases to use them, what are their advantages and disadvantages.
Pool cover or cover: what is it for?
The pool cover is a plastic cover. It is very useful for:
- Avoid rapid clogging of the pool: the cover protects the water from insects, dust, plant debris,
- Limit the risk of algae proliferation,
- Reduce the use of treating products,
- Make it easier to start the swimming pool after wintering.
Before buying a swimming pool cover, it is very important to take an interest in the peculiarities of the models offered because they do not all have the same qualities.
Pool cover or cover: what about the safety standard?
Please note, it is imperative that the NF P90-308 standard is respected so that a swimming pool cover falls into the category of pool safety devices.
This is the case with certain tarpaulins only. Many pool covers or nets must therefore be supplemented by an approved device as long as they are not stamped with this standard.
Different models of swimming pool covers: the + and –
Buying a swimming pool cover is not easy. In addition to protecting the pool water, it must be reliable if it is the only pool safety device. It must be able to protect children and pets from falling into the pool.
The winter cover for swimming pool
This cover is very opaque, which is why it is recommended in winter since this significantly reduces the development of algae. This blanket should only be put on once the swimming season is over. Some models are part of the pool safety devices. Before buying, make sure that the product complies with the standard in force. Remember that to be legal, a swimming pool cover must be able to bear the weight of an adult person without sinking into the water.
The bubble cover for swimming pools
It is a cover system that we use only in summer. Thanks to the suction effect, it remains flat on the surface of the swimming pool. There are different fixing systems: either with a retractor, which is located on one end of the pool, or with fixing to the coping.
The bubble cover limits water evaporation, maintains a satisfactory water temperature overnight and even allows pool water to be heated. It is therefore a very practical system for making savings in terms of heating but also of treatment products since it protects the pond against dust, insects and plant debris.
On the other hand, it is in no way a swimming pool safety device because it is not rigid enough to prevent a child (or a pet) from drowning.
The 3 in 1 pool cover
This version is often called four seasons tarpaulin because it fulfills all the roles: both summer cover and winter cover. It is an ideal model equipped with a reel and which offers high wind resistance because of its maximum tension that we owe to its pawls and welded straps. This pool cover is reinforced. It is suitable for swimming pools with an area of 45 m² or more. This is a safety device that meets the standard.
The pool cover: what you need to know
A swimming pool cover is a cover that must be perfectly stretched to limit the risk of drowning when the pool is covered. The smallest space between the blanket and the edge of the pool represents a danger for children and even for pets. Likewise, a tarp that sinks into the water under a person’s weight increases risk. Whatever the model of cover chosen, with or without a reel, this cover must imperatively remain flat on the water.
Its installation generally requires the contribution of two people. A basic model is stretched manually but you can afford a tarpaulin with integrated roller.
It is also possible to buy a roll-up system for pool cover or cover. It is a resistant device, available in different dimensions, made up of telescopic tubes. It is suitable for a tarpaulin with or without eyelets thanks to its universal straps with clips. As an indication, a reel system costs between 150 and 200 €, an amount which is added to the price of the cover. Note that a quote is necessary to know the cost of a cover if you have a very large swimming pool.
Better to seek advice from a pool specialist when buying a tarpaulin. Indeed, some models can not be installed on an infinity pool or do not adapt if the pool is equipped with a ladder for example. You can also use online comparator to take advantage of the competition in this area. But beware, the price should not be the only purchase criterion. There is no deviation from either the quality or the NF P90-308 standard.
