Video games: Micromania launches console rental, but is it worth it? – EconomyMorning

Historical brand specializing in video games, Micromania-Zing (since its merger with the Zing brand specializing in derivative products) announced on June 8, 2021 a new offer: Long Term Rental for consoles. But beware: the price paid may be more expensive than a simple purchase.

A Playstation 5 or a Switch in LLD?

Micromania’s LLD offer is available for two consoles: the Playstation 5 and the Nintendo Switch. No Xbox Series, therefore, at least for now (but the group has already announced that it will be available).

For the Playstation 5, three formulas are available: a simple one, called “Starter Package”, at 17.99 euros per month for 24 months, a “Pro Gamer” which offers additional services such as a second controller and breakdown and breakage guarantees. at 24.99 euros per month for 24 months, and the Gamer + package at 19.99 euros per month for 36 months. It is necessary to add, in addition and for each offer, a first payment of 69.99 euros.

Regarding the Nintendo Switch, two proposals are made: 17.49 euros per month for 18 months with a first payment of 44.99 euros per month (Starter package) or 19.99 euros per month for 24 months with a first payment of 64.99 euros for the Plus plan which includes breakdown and breakage guarantees or a second pair of Joycon.

Pay more … not to own the console?

The offer may seem tempting but… it is an LLD. As often, it is not necessarily worth it: LLDs in household appliances are also regularly denounced by consumer associations because of the risk of family over-indebtedness.

Thus, by taking for example the Pro Gamer package for the Playstation 5 for 24 months, the customer will have paid, in all, 669.75 euros. If the expense is spread over time, it is more expensive than a new Playstation 5 console (launch price: 399.99 euros, or 499.99 euros with disc player) even by adding the price of the second controller. (69.99 euros).

For the Nintendo Switch, it’s roughly the same problem: in the Plus package, the console will cost a total of 544.75 euros, while new it costs less than 300 euros and a pair of Joycon is easily found on the 60 euros in store.

And, besides paying more, the contract provides that the console will never belong to the player : like any LLD, at the end of the lease the lessor recovers it, potentially to resell it on the second-hand market.
